While the Indian Defence Forces are currently avenging the across border terrorism, the veterans of Atulya Ganga Trust (AGT), the most sure footed initiative working on rejuvenation of Ganga basin since 2019, in their quest to exhibit their continued commitment to protect the environment of their Motherland in their second innings, are setting out on Uttarakhand Plastic Eradication Kaar Sewa from Gangotri to Harsil from 5 June 2025. We have the support of our parent establishment, the Indian Army, Border Road Services, The Uttarakhand government, and The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering.

Plastic Eradication Kaar Sewa

  • Flagging off of Kaar Sewa.The Kaar Sewa was flagged off by Col Harshwardhan Singh Shekhawat, Commanding Officer 14 Raj Rif from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering Uttarkashi on 4th June 2025. At the ceremony, Cdr Amod Chaudhury, heading the initiative for Atulya Ganga, highlighted the need for a comprehensive, and technology driven waste management policy on PPP model. He also appealed to the government to consider renaming river Ganga as " Maa Ganga", to bring sensitivity and Ownership in the larger public domain. The flag off was attended by the CDO Uttarkashi, Principal NIM, District Ganga Committee, NGOs, environmentalists, and local youth.

  • Conduct of awareness campaign at Harsil on 5th June 2025. Attended by an audience of 350 persons, comprising eight village pradhans, local youth organisations, students and teachers of nearby schools, we conducted two hours long awareness campaign.
  • Inducing public participation in plastic waste eradication by setting personal example on the World Environment day, 5th and 6th June 2025. Along with a team of 30 young volunteers We collected all the plastic waste littered on the Gangotri Ghat. The collected waste was handed over to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) for further disposal. In addition, plastic banks were installed at the plastic waste load points in our stretch of operation.
  • Inducing the sense of social responsibility amongst pilgrims. We also erected posters in our adopted stretch urging the pilgrims to abstain from polluting Deity Ganga with plastic waste. We interacted with the mandir Committee, nagar panchayat Gangotri, to work out a plan to reduce littering of Ganga with plastic and other waste and will submit it to the Uttarakhand government for considering it's implementation.
  • We will urge the government to ensure the ULBs strictly monitor availability of dustbins near all roadside eateries and temples in our adopted stretch. We shall request the accumulated waste is collected from them every morning, and levying of fines on defaulters, for non-availability of dustbins and irregular cleaning.

AGP has achieved significant milestones in its mission to rejuvenate the rivers of the Ganga basin and promote environmental sustainability. These accomplishments include the participation of the Atulya Ganga tableau in the Republic Day Parade 2023, receipt of the Green Globe Award for outstanding work in river rejuvenation, and international recognition for the development of a Water Quality Index. AGP's efforts also encompass extensive pollution mapping, public engagement initiatives, and technical competence led by experts in environmental science and management. Additionally, the Vrikshmal plantation drive aims to address deforestation in the Ganga Basin through extensive tree planting and monitoring efforts.
